The theme of ICAIS 2026 [23-27 August 2026, Belfast, Northern Ireland] is Transcending Boundaries, to explore how aquatic invasive species can be addressed through integration of research and practice across habitat types, geographic regions, scientific and other disciplines, and research-policy interfaces.
GuardIAS will host a two-hour workshop focused on closing the “knowing–doing gap”in the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) for invasive alien species (IAS) management. While eDNA is widely used for detection, its broader potential for management and decision-making remains underused. The workshop aims to:
- Highlight the management potential of advanced eDNA approaches
- Clarify the practical and policy hurdles faced by end users
- Lay the groundwork for a joint scientific paper guiding wider adoption of eDNA in IAS management
The workshop will bring together eDNA experts, invasion scientists, managers, and policymakers and will include:
- Short expert talks (45 min) showcasing innovative eDNA applications beyond presence/absence
- Moderated discussion (45 min) to identify key barriers and concerns limiting uptake by end users
- Synthesis session (30 min) to summarize challenges and co-develop a global questionnaire to be circulated after the workshop
