INBO and EASIN Strengthen Collaboration with EASIN on Invasive Species Data Publication
INBO colleagues Lien Reyserhove (OneSTOP project) and Damiano Oldoni (GuardIAS project) conducted a productive two-day scientific exchange at the European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) facility at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy.
The visit focused on advancing the publication of EASIN data through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), with particular attention to the EASIN Catalogue of Alien Species and the occurrence records generated by the Invasive Alien Species in Europe (IASE) web application.
Key topics discussed during the exchange included:
- Data workflow: Gaining deeper insights into EASIN’s internal data processes and architecture
- Data structure: Examining the fields and structure of the EASIN Species Catalogue and GeoDatabase
- Standardization: Mapping EASIN data to the Darwin Core (DwC) standard to ensure interoperability
- Metadata development: Sharing experience about GBIF related metadata to accompany published datasets
- Technical implementation: Addressing practical aspects of GBIF data publication, including data upload procedures via the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT)
- Future collaboration: Establishing action points and selecting GitHub as the platform for openly sharing mapping documentation and collaboratively addressing technical issues
This collaboration represents an important step toward improving the accessibility, discoverability and promotion of EASIN data data for the broader research and conservation community.
